Giant Pandas (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) live mainly in temperate forests high in the mountains of southwest China, where they eat almost nothing but bamboo. They have to eat a lot because bamboo isn't very nutritious! As a result of farming, deforestation, and other developments, giant pandas have been driven out of the lowland areas where they once lived. The Sichuan Giant Panda Sanctuaries, located in the southwest province of Sichuan and covering seven natural reserves, constitute the largest remaining contiguous habitat of giant pandas and were added to the World Heritage List in 2006.
